What is Barre?
What is Barre?
The question I get asked the most is “What is Barre?” But because I am so passionate about Barre and the actual “barre” has been a part of my life since I was 3 and a tiny tot ballerina, I often forget that not everyone knows what I am talking about when I am rambling on about what I do for a living! Of course, I get the jokes of “Oh yeah, I know what a BAR is hahahahah” but I am always surprised by the amount of people who are not familiar with one of the most popular forms of exercise that has been around for over 6 decades! I also think that there are quite a few people who have a misconstrued idea of what Barre is and have images of prima ballerinas prancing around with dumbbells in their hands! So, to keep it short and sweet, I thought I would list my top 3 easiest answers I give when asked “What is Barre?”
1.) Barre is a hybrid workout that is a combination of Pilates and yoga, some ballet-inspired moves, cardio components and a dash of strength training that makes this the perfect total-body workout!
2.) Barre was first created in 1959 by a former ballerina, Lotte Berk, after she was injured and was in need of a new exercise regimen that also combined her physical therapy exercises. Even though Barre was created by a ballerina, it is perfect for dancers and non-dancers alike!
3.) Barre helps lengthen and strengthen your muscles with small, isometric movements using your bodyweight (you will become very familiar with the terms “pulse” and “hold!”) , light dumbbells and other fun props such as the ballet barre, a Pilates Bender Ball and bands! The coveted “Barre Burn” (that lovely burning feeling in your muscles) and a “Barre-gasm” (when your legs start shaking uncontrollably) are great ways to get that “dancer-esque” physique!
Barre is such an amazing workout because it gives you everything you want and need in one class: cardio, strength training and stretching. You will use (and feel!) muscles that you never even knew you had! I encourage you, if you are new to the idea of Barre, to put all your misconceptions aside and come with an open mind!
