How to Stay Motivated While Working Out At Home

I am a big proponent for getting your workouts in whenever and wherever with no excuses. At home workouts make for both great “substitutes” when you are traveling or in a a busy season and as a stand alone fitness regimen. Taking advantage of being able to workout with no excuses (weather, sick kid, hectic schedule) can really be a game changer when it comes to reaching fitness goals. But staying motivated without the accountability of showing up to a scheduled class, feeding off the energy of other people or having an instructor right there with you can be tough for some. I often hear “Oh working out at home isn’t for me, I am not motivated/dedicated/focused enough.” The reality actually is that it’s for everyone! Below are three super easy and practical ways to stay motived while working out at home.

1.) Find a Workout You Love. I consider myself quite a motivated person, especially when it comes to working out. But it is nearly impossible to get myself psyched to do something that I don’t thoroughly enjoy. Believe it or not, even for my fitness skeptics, I promise you there is a workout out there that you can actually love! The first trick in getting motivated to get your sweat on at home is to find a workout that you can get excited about. If you are looking forward to it, it won’t seem like a chore and will turn into a self-motivator.

2.) Set Yourself Up For Success. You have find a workout that gets you pumped, so now the second way to keep with it is to make things as easy as possible. Find a designated area that can be your “studio" - this can look like your bedroom, living room, office space, garage, etc. Create a space that you can easily setup when it comes time to workout so it’s not some big production. Have any necessary equipment handy and set out your sassy pants and top either the night before or morning of. Sometimes the hardest part of getting your workout in at home is the “getting ready” part, so if you have everything readily available, you just have to push play!

3.) Hold Yourself Accountable. If you were going to an actual “live” fitness class, you would most likely schedule that class in your calendar, sign up in advance and show up. So why treat at-home workouts any differently? At the start of the week, plan ahead and make daily appointments in your calendar. Don’t flake on yourself! I totally get that life can get in the way sometimes, so have a “plan B” time incase your first appointment has to get moved. Even if you are only able to get squeeze in thirty minutes, something is better than nothing! And if you need a little external motivation sometimes, invite a gal pal over for a partner workout! She’ll thank ya later ;)

Like I mentioned before, at-home workouts can be a complete game changer. Whether you use them as a regular fitness routine or in a pinch, they are a great way to stay on track and reach your goals. And they really are for everyone, not just those “self-motivators.” If you can find a workout you actually want to do, set yourself up to succeed and show up for yourself, you too can enjoy all the benefits it offers!
