Why You Should Do the Same Playlist Multiple Times a Week

One of my greatest pieces of advice that I give to those new to taking Barre Where You Are’s barre classes may come as a bit of a surprise to you. It’s not to make sure you have all the proper equipment or the sassiest of sassy pants (although those are both very important 😉), it’s to do the same playlist/workout multiple times a week. You may be thinking, “wait aren’t I am going to get bored?” “Out of the 100+ different workouts in the on-demand library, why would I do the same one 3-4 times during the week?” I can promise you that you won’t tire of it and the benefits of repeating workouts will convince you to keep pressing play. Let’s dive in!

1.) Tailor it to Your Needs. When you do the same playlist/workout multiple times a week, you and I get to know one another and become better acquainted! Just like anything you do again and again, you will be able to anticipate what is coming next and get a more thorough workout instead of always being caught off guard. When you repeat an exercise/series more than once in a given week, you are able to accommodate it to suit you. You will be more comfortable with any of the modifications needed and can more easily change the tempo, number of reps or difficulty level without feeling overwhelmed and lost.

2.) Track Your Progress. If you choose to repeat a workout 3-4 times a week, you will be able to look back and see yourself improve from Day 1, to Day 2, to Day 3 and so on and so forth. Maybe the first time you did a Pushup Series you had to take multiple rest breaks, but by the end of the week you were able to get through the entire series with only having to stop once! Or perhaps by the third time you did a playlist that week you were able to hold your dumbbell during pliés at the barre for the entirety of the song! If we are constantly changing up the workout and doing different series and exercises, it makes it more difficult to track our progress and see how much stronger we are getting!

3.) Prevent Injuries. When you know better, you do better. Going back to point number one, when you know what to expect and aren’t feeling flustered or overwhelmed with new exercises and series, you are better able to focus on proper form and muscle engagement. This then leads to a safer workout. When you are better prepared for any modifications you may need, it allows for you to protect your joints and muscles while still getting a great workout session in. Now some may be asking “But Heather, if I am sore from day one of the workout, should I really be doing the same workout and using those same muscles in the same way when they are already feeling tired and tight?” And my answer to that would be a resounding YES! Studies show that when you are sore, it can be very helpful to use the same muscles groups in the same way so you can warm them up and stretch them back out again and can decrease the “day after the day after” soreness. It’s kind of like the hair of the dog 😉

A creative, well-thought out playlist should always keep you coming back for more, which is exactly what I strive for with every playlist I create! I also want you to get the most out of each and every workout and our Barre Babes can attest to the benefits of repeating the same playlist multiples times throughout the week. Being able to tailor it to your needs, track your progress and prevent future injuries will help put you on the right track to a strong and healthy barre-body!
