How Can I Use My New Barre Instructor Certification?

You have just attended your first Barre Instructor Training and you are thinking, “Ok, now what?!” As cliché as it might sound, the world is your oyster! The opportunities are endless and what you do with it and where you go is truly up to you and what fits you best! I am going to break down three of the most common options for what to do with your brand spanking new certification to better help you figure it out!

1.) Gyms/Studios. Probably one of the most common ways to use your Barre Instructor Certification is to go teach at a gym or studio. Most places (all should really) will require proof of an accredited certification upon hiring. You would be either a W2 or 1099 employee of the facility and teach classes during set times that are mutually agreed upon you and the gym management. Some gyms pay a flat class rate, others will pay a per head amount. I prefer a flat class rate with negotiations for a bonus if classes exceed a certain amount. The facility would provide insurance coverage and take care of marketing fees. For an instructor just starting out, teaching at a gym or studio is a great place to start!

2.) Community. If you are considering going more “solo” and want to create your own business but don’t want a brick and mortar, one model would be teaching classes around your community. Maybe at a park, community center, schools, or any approved public space is a fun way to change up the scenery and be known in your area! I highly recommend getting business insurance and a business license to help with liability and taxes in the future.

3.) Virtual. Lastly, another business model option if you are looking to branch off on your own is to offer classes virtually. The world wide web is at your fingertips, so use it! You can teach via ZOOM and your clients are able to attend wherever they are! I still would advise getting a business license and insurance so you are legit and this option does require a little more technology knowledge than the others. You will want to make sure you have a good internet connection, sound quality and lighting. Teaching virtually is a little different than teaching in-person, so I always recommend first teaching clients in-person first so you become very comfortable with verbal and visual cues.

There is definitely not a one size fits all approach when it comes to how you can use your Barre Instructor Certification. It really depends on what you want and your level of investment, both of time and finances. There is also nothing stopping you from doing all three! No matter what, remember that each experience is an opportunity to grow and learn!
